Ichtaca

by

Emma Vansuch

The Momoztli, a huge natural hole in the ground at the top of the cliff, is used by the inhabitants of Tanhuaca for the disposal of anyone and everyone: the monthly human sacrifice, criminals, elderly, unwanted babies, orphans, sterile young women, and cripples. All those who are not useful, who cannot contribute to Tanhuaca, are thrown down with ceremony to appease the gods and better the community. When Eztli is picked as a sacrificial victim and thrown into the Momoztli as an offering, she literally lands in the middle of a ten-year-old secret, a cavern-dwelling community of past victims, led by the first man to survive. However, the community, known as the Ichtaca, turns out to be a dangerous haven. Peopled with criminals, children, and grandparents, and led by a harsh living legend, the community is inching towards self-destruction. The situation becomes only more urgent when the victims begin to come alarmingly frequently, at strange times… and already viciously murdered.

by

This story is set in Tillatokiote, an ancient civilization that divides society into four different sections called Senelists, depending on the type of purpose a person chooses to live his or her life. The four different Senelists of Peso, Gloria, Teo, and Amor are led by an Akatli who rules over all of the people that are in each Senelist, and together, the four Akatlis rule Tillatokiote along with the civilization's government, known as the Calpulli. However, Tillatokiote faces opposition with the rebel group, Maxima Quoti, and tension rises when the Amati Atli, a separate society for those who do not choose to be a part of a Senelist, start to become allies with the Maxima Quoti. To make matters worse, the current four Akatlis die at the hands of the leader of Maxima Quoti, Leontes Expowa, and the Calpulli choose four new Akatlis to lead the Senelists. These four, Cas Tolle, Roderick Moc, Trinity Cawa, and Amadora Alli, fulfill their new duties by trying to secure peace with Maxima Quoti. To do this, two of the Akatlis, Cas and Roderick, go to the Amati Atli base to convince the group not to join sides with Maxima Quoti. At the same time, the other two Akatlis, Trinity and Amadora, visit indigenous towns in Tillatokiote to help the needs of the less fortunate civilians. However, militia of Maxima Quoti ambush the town Trinity and Amadora are in, and capture Amadora in the process. Now taken to the Maxima Quoti mainland as prisoner, Amadora tries to persuade Leontes not to go through with his vile plans. Meanwhile, Roderick tries to retrieve Amadora back from the rebel group by secretly ambushing their mainland with his own personal militia. However, Leontes orders Roderick to surrender his militia to Maxima Quoti in order to spare Amadora's life, and Roderick agrees. Now, Roderick and Amadora are both prisoners, and Cas and Trinity are left to negotiate with Leontes to try and get Roderick and Amadora back to Tillatokiote alive.

"My dearest Aviela, I don’t know how this letter will find you. I can only hope that it will not get lost along the way and that, somehow, you see these words. How long has it been since we last saw each other? Six months?" So begins the first of a series of letters from Everett, a young man of 23, who has recently started his new job aboard The Atlantic Express, the passenger train from South Africa to Canada. Through his letters, he accounts his adventures on board, the friends (and, perhaps, enemies) he makes, and reminisces about his past - the reason he joined in the first place.

Her country is losing a war. Her father was a hero, but he has been forgotten by the public. The enemy erased thousands of memories. She fought in his honor until her best friend betrayed her, leaving her with battle scars and paranoia. Now, she collects stories instead of living her own. Her director, head of the undercover organization to reinstate the true king, still thinks she'd be a valuable agent, but she's too scared to move back into field work, preferring to act as an unofficial historian, preserving the memories the enemy is trying to steal. She hopes to build up enough evidence to overcome the corrupted government system and prove who really belongs on the throne. Yet a seemingly tame mission to collect an important file from an abandoned bookstore becomes a dangerous rescue when she finds a mysterious man trapped by a device of her own invention, hiding a secret and questioning his loyalties. This is their story.

by

Sarah Miller

Island Wood

by

Dani Burhop

Emalene Bemis Sommer is a midwestern kid – earnest, sturdy, and often boundlessly happy. She lives in northern Wisconsin with her older brother Bobby, Libertarian mother, trucker father, and gambling grandma. It is the spring of 1993, just a few weeks before the rains come, bringing to the Midwest record floods and a state of emergency. But before the rain starts, there is Dee: he is a scrappy, dirty, needy kid, who walks out of the woods and into their lives. He follows Emalene and Bobby home, where he is effectively adopted, much to Emalene’s delight, and Bobby’s chagrin. This novel is the story of the Sommers during this pivotal year for their family, told from the perspective of Emalene, reflecting on her 12-year-old self. Island Wood is an idea, a place, and a creation. It is also the precise location in Wisconsin where Dee Lain comes from, according Emalene Bemis Sommer, our heroine and narrator. Dee is the strange boy from the woods who has taken up residence in the Sommer household, much to the chagrin of Emalene's older brother, Bobby. But before they can get settled, history intervenes: their comfortable reality begins to flood. Emalene, Bobby and Dee will strike out into this watery world in search of Dee's true homestead. None of them are sure how they will get there, or what they will find when they arrive.

Dr. Jasper Madison is one of the most well respected medical examiners in San Diego, with his southern charm and medical expertise. No one knows the coroner trade better than the native Louisianan, and for good reason: he's had years of experience-decades even. Dr. Madison has been hiding his identity as a man-eating Rougaroux for centuries, taking flesh from his "patients" to feed himself, as well as his "teenage" daughter. Eating the flesh of the dead isn't ideal, but the alternative is to take human lives, and risk attracting unwanted attention. And that attention comes from the most unlikely of sources: Jasper's friend and coworker, Detective Alec Sawyer. The detective is warm and friendly, but more importantly, he's a Huntsman: a descendant from a long line of monster hunters, much like those who killed Jasper's wife decades ago. And he's got his sights set on Jasper. But before Alec can put the silver bullet in Jasper's coffin, a more terrifying beast rolls into town. And, as hesitant as both may seem, both man and monster will have to work together to catch a killer before more victims begin to roll into Balboa Morgue.
