Ghost Kids

by

Luke Starnes

When I started working on Ghost Kids nearly six years ago I often thought the concept was too bizarre to execute well. It showed a United States looking inward and backward, cloning it’s icons because the future was too stark and strange to face. This year we elected a culturally regressive reality TV star as president that promises to “make America great again”, and suddenly my science fiction twist on a need for national familiarity seems far less bizarre. This book is by no means a finished product, but I'd love to hear what you think of it.

Centipede

"On every third day, someone must die." It should be an easy enough rule to keep when James has lived his entire life apathetic of both others and himself. Yet, as he awakes in a prison riddled with dead bodies and armed children, James feels emotion for the first time in his entire life. He does not look at the others trapped in this strange place unemotionally, and even less when he learns that they're all apart of a secret organization called Centipede. A little boy on a screen tells the group they must kill each other for his pure enjoyment and simple hatred of them, so James finds himself in the middle of a murder game he isn't even involved in. No punishment for disobeying the 3-Day-Rule of death is made obvious, but as people begin to die, the cruelty at work shows that there is no boundary it isn't willing to cross. Blood starts to spill, disease starts spread, and as everyone tries their hardest to brush off the deaths of the people they know, things get worse. Because, sometimes, things really don't get better. At least not for unlikable, horrible people like these.

But while Thomas gains a hoverchair and colossal respect, his foster family is brutally enslaved. Cherise once saved his life by coaching him through depression. Now she'll be worked to death unless Thomas can persuade his telepathic admirers to have mercy. ### In a galaxy without privacy, mercy is unknown. Popular ideas mean promotion. Unpopular ideas are fatal. In order to save the people he loves, Thomas must wrench himself away from billions of now-suspicious telepaths. And then, unable to walk, he must free slaves and defy armies. No one has ever survived being hunted by the most ruthless and brilliant minds in existence ... but Thomas is, after all, one of them.

Far in the future, the Earth has been destroyed and few humans were able to escape to the far reaches of space. The human race is now an endangered species, and is being preserved by being "matched" with genetically engineered brides. Obedient, beautiful, and above all, healthy, most men are happy with what the Matchmaker brings them. Of course, most men aren't romantics, like Trig. Is there more to preserving humanity than what is left of genetic code?

A collection of stories from the strangest parts of my imagination. "ZMBIE" - The world has gone to shit, but business is booming. ZMBIE is the leading app, kiosk, and company in the zombie apocalypse with all your survival needs from machetes to flame throwers, bullets to hand grenades, silencers to bayonets, you name it we will deliver. Literally, our new delivery service offers your weapon, food, and tech needs within 3-5 hours of ordering to any location of your choosing. Remember all items must be purchased in full, no monthly payments accepted because you are probably dead already. Next month, we will be placing vending locations all over every major city to meet your demands on the run, take in to consideration that stock availability, item selection, and employee cooperation vary on location because FUCK YOU, TOO. Do not forget to download our sister app "Dealr", which brings all of your illicit drug needs to your door step during man's final moments. Also, we needn't remind you that we knock and zombies don't, so don't be an idiot. Refunds are only available upon delivery man's death unless you are the one who ate him then that is a $5,000 fine. Pleasure doing business with you, we hope it's the last time. "RED" - In 2022, Blood clubs are all the rage, and you cannot go 10 city blocks without seeing the red lights and blacked out windows. Clubs with names like Blood, Vamp, Bathe, and Fang are in every major city, but there is only one original blood club, and it's history makes these new blood clubs look like a daycare. The wood panels are stained black from all the blood smeared and caked on them over the club's 150 years in operation... Wasteland

by

Cristi Brewer

There are a lot of kids like me. We struggle to wake up or go to sleep, to eat food or to stop eating. We face a choice everyday, let our pain show or keep it hidden away by wearing headphones and a hoodie all day to keep your cruel words away. We hear the words you say and the way you mock us the way you do. We are the wasted ones, the ones who will never fit in because to you we are sad or we are always scared of something or someone for no reason. Oh, and my favorite, the not eating to get attention. Classic. We are people just like you. You don't understand, so we did the right thing and we grouped together to keep each other safe, like a support group, and you took our only form of peace and used it against us. We woke up to the police at our bedside and you and the whole world watched as we were gathered up and sent us to some deserted part of town. What we didn't know is eventually everyone around the world started to do it to. You took broken souls and hearts and ripped them from their home. You took the only form of stability we had and treated us like we were criminals, even though we were innocent. You treated us like we were wild animals, and every time we tried to get justice you shut us down with your police who were supposed to serve and protect us. You mocked our home and you stole everything from us. But we are a society now, we've bonded and we protect each other. So go on and bring on the police and the government because we aren't going anywhere. We will stand up, we will be heard and there will be a change. The walls are all gone, we will show you what it is like to live in a place that looks exactly like how you feel. Welcome to Wasteland.
